Two of the most attentive observers of our society: Sociologist Steffen Mau has brought new arguments to an old debate with his study Triggerpunkte. Whether social inequality, migration, diversity and gender or climate protection – quite often, we are astonished to find that there is at least some degree of social consensus.
However, if certain sensitivities are triggered, the debate suddenly flares up.
Sociologist Hartmut Rosa, who teaches in Jena, is working on a theory of resonance. He believes that people feel threatened by the major challenges of an increasingly accelerating modern age, but shares this view only to a limited extent and fears that that state of affairs in the US will also prevail in this country. In a year in which important election decisions are due, both are asking: How divided is our society?
