"What should I do?" is one of the four philosophical questions that Kant considered to be the most crucial. As an Enlightenment philosopher, he stood for the idea of cosmopolitanism, global peace and a universally applicable ethic which also extends to the treatment of nature. All this seems to have little chance today. Humanity is in a phase of planetary upheaval that encompasses climate, conflicts and the prerequisites of coexistence. Moral facts are cast in doubt, as is the universal validity of ethical principles. Can Kant's radical universalism still be upheld today? Gert Scobel is joined by philosopher Markus Gabriel ("Moralischer Fortschritt in dunklen Zeiten") and jurist and international law expert Karina Theurer, whose work focuses on colonialism and human rights enforcement, among other topics.
