Morality as a show? Seeking the correct moral posture. With Philipp Hübl and Emilia Roig
The rifts running through society are getting deeper and deeper in this time of grave conflict. Groups work themselves into a state moral outrage and hurl accusations at each other. They are disturbingly quick to draw clear boundaries between "good" and "evil", between "us" and "them", between "friend" and "foe". Silence and hatred take the place of substantive debate. In his new book Moralspektakel, philosopher Philipp Hübl describes
an unproductive morality spectacle that only serves to narcissistically “power up”
One side’s own identity. But from an activist perspective, as presented by political scientist Emilia Roig (“Why We Matter: Das Ende der Unterdrückung” and most recently “Das Ende der Ehe”), things look different: as long as we live under oppressive, patriarchal conditions, we must be outraged and hold people to account. How can we engage in dispute in a contemporary mode?
