Israel is at war. The terrorist attack perpetrated by the radical Islamic organisation Hamas is Israel’s greatest catastrophe in recent decades and the tragic climax of the long-running conflict. The war has also suddenly changed how Israel is viewed. Whereas until quite recently the planned judicial reform of the governing coalition of right-wing conservatives and extremists, and thus the question of whether Israel would remain a democratic state, was the focus of concern, public attention is now shifting between the poles of unconditional and unreserved solidarity with Israel and a critical assessment of the further course of the war and its consequences for Palestinian civilians.
In his new book Bedrohtes Israel , Avi Primor, the former Israeli ambassador to Germany, talks about warfare as waged by Israel and Hamas, and about what the future of his homeland could look like. Will there ever be peace in the Middle East? Mod.: Sonia Mikich
