Art and art forgery in the age of AI. With Wolfgang Beltracchi
They have names like Dall•e, Midjourney or Leonardo. Hundreds of AI image generators are now available to create complex visual worlds in a wide variety of styles using simple prompts. What does this mean for the originality of works of art? Is the concept of "aura", which Walter Benjamin still regarded as essential to the work of art, finally obsolete? Do we have to fundamentally bid farewell the concept of "originality"?
Wolfgang Beltracchi is regarded as one of the most skilful and talented art forgers; the trial against him was one of the most spectacular forgery trials of the post-war period. It is assumed that some of his forgeries still hang on the walls of collections and museums as authentic works. Would that still be possible in our digitalised era? Or will we all become forgers?
